FROM THE MANAGER: Besides the environmental reasons, recycling produces an economic benefit to Windham. For every ton of waste recycled (diverted), we save $69 from the Transfer Station’s operational budget or last year’s diversion saved $104,000. Our recycling rate is 27%. Each percentage increase will save approximately $1000 from the budget. How about a goal of 35%? Also, recycling produces revenue for Windham. Our single stream recyclables and metal produces approximately $50,000-$75,000/year in returned revenue to the general fund. We thank residents for recycling, but we should challenge ourselves to do better. If you need motivation, THINK ABOUT YOUR TAXES!

Our Mission Statement: "To provide an efficient and effective Solid Waste Transfer/Recycling Station for the residents of Windham with an ongoing commitment to improvement".

The Station provides solid waste disposal needs exclusively for the residents of Windham through a permit (window sticker) issued to each verified resident, or to a commercial hauler that has entered into a contractual agreement with the Town. All commercial/ industrial generated solid waste must be weighed and is subject to a disposal charge based upon the quantity and nature of the material. If you are disposing of an item which you are unsure of, please contact the Transfer/ Recycling station before transport to ensure that it is not a prohibited item. Signage is also posted at the Station to assist you.

Recycling and Acceptable Materials:

Recycling is mandatory in Windham, and separation is required at the Station to ensure recyclable items are placed in the correct areas.  More information on the operation of the Station can be obtained by calling (603) 426-5102, or you may wish to review the Town's Solid Waste Ordinance . Also, brochures are available at the Transfer Station and Town Hall, or you may view online our latest informational brochure.

Yard Waste:

Yard waste material should be deposited at the Marblehead Road Landfill site, which is open 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from April through November.

Hazardous Waste:

Hazardous waste may be disposed of at specific times through the Household Hazardous Waste Collection program provided by the Nashua Regional Planning Commission.

2010 Collection Dates: April 24, Nashua / May 8, Milford / June 3, Nashua (3P-7P) / August 7, Nashua / October 2, Nashua / November 6, Nashua. Hours are 8 AM to 12 PM unless otherwise noted.

Special Instructions:

  • Video display units (televisions, computer monitors, etc) are no longer general trash, and must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

  • "Sharps" (hypodermic needles) must be encased in a secure container and be physically handed to a Station employee. Residents contracting curbside pickup are asked not to include sharps or other medical waste in their weekly trash.

  • Sleeper sofas must have their metal frame removed prior to disposal. The frame should be deposited into the steel bin, and the sofa into general trash.

  • Sheetrock (drywall) and porcelain products (toilets, etc.) are considered demolition waste.

  • Elderly residents are encouraged to seek the assistance of staff when disposing of heavy or bulky materials that may result in their injury.

  • In the interest of their health and safety, we ask that your children aged six (6) and under remain in your vehicle as you dispose of your items.

  • Fuel tanks must be removed prior to disposal of any motorized equipment. Also, all fluids should be drained.

  • Beginning January 1, 2008, all products containing intentionally-added mercury will be prohibited from disposal at the Transfer/Recycling Station. These items include, but are not limited to, thermometers, thermostats, electrical relays, and fluorescent and CFL light bulbs. Please check the product label to ensure no mercury content.

  • Because of handling issues, we would ask residents to contain shredded paper in a cardboard box or paper bag when when depositing it at the Transfer Station. This form of paper is very difficult to handle and contain in the single stream processing. We thank you for your cooperation and compliance.

  • Fluorescent bulbs can be recycled at Cyr Lumber, 39 Rockingham Road, Windham. Please call 898-5136 for more information.

  • Effective March 11, 2008, the Transfer Station will no longer accept commercial construction/demolition waste. All commercial entities should divert their C&D to an alternative disposal location. Residents may continue to bring their C&D in their own vehicle. If you have any questions, please contact the Station at 426-5102.
